How Schnitzel Sliders Came To Be

Three little condiments. You may or may not be aware that my son Eran has been writing his own newsletter at Tour My Germany for a while now. He shares what’s worth seeing in Germany, the cultural surprises he finds along the way, and those funny in-between moments of growing up as a first-generation Canadian with a German home life while now living in Wales.Well, he sent me straight down memory lane the other day with his latest newsletter. He casually mentioned his favorite sandwich as a child. Are you ready? Ketchup, mustard, and relish. That’s it. And I’ll be honest, my first thought was: What will people think of me, his mother, who now has a German recipe website and THIS is what her child remembers! I had to laugh. No German wiener, or anything to “balance” it out. Just three condiments and the proud conviction of a kid who knows exactly what he wants. It started because I didn’t have any wieners in the house one day, and he decided, “Forget the wiener. Just give me everything else.” But what really touched me was this: it was also the first thing he could make all by himself. So in his little kid mind, it wasn’t only lunch. It was independence. I remember standing there thinking, “This is… not what I pictured.” And yet, in the moment, you accept it. That’s parenting. You roll with it and tuck it away as one more odd little chapter in your family story. Then the years go by, always faster than you expect. And now I watch him cook with one foot in classic German food and the other foot in “let’s try it this way.” He makes his own version of “burger sliders” but instead of a beef patty, he adds a pork schnitzel. And instead of that ketchup, mustard, relish situation, he goes for a mustard beer sauce. I guess I did raise him right after all 😂 Like his schnitzel sliders: not traditional, but still full of German flavors. He just adds his own spin and that makes my heart happy. Heritage can show up in the funniest ways. Sometimes it’s a child who once adored a condiment sandwich growing up into a man who makes schnitzel with a mustard beer sauce and chuckles while he does it. And honestly, it reminded me of what I want to tell you today: Don’t sweat the small stuff. If your house feels a bit chaotic, if dinner isn’t always “storybook perfect,” if your kids and grandkids love something that makes you raise one eyebrow, it’s okay.
