Hefezopf and Burned Chili

The smell changed.

Years ago, when our eldest son Andrew was still a teenager, he decided he was going to make chili from scratch.

Not from a package or from one of my recipes. This was going to be his own.

So I picked up what he needed from the store and left him to it.

For a while, the house smelled wonderful. We kept finding reasons to walk past the kitchen, just to see how things were coming along. Then the smell began to change.

I still don’t know exactly what went wrong. Maybe the stove was too high. Maybe he forgot to stir. Whatever happened, he burned it.
