German Cucumber Salad and Lydia’s Kitchen Lessons

One little stool.

My granddaughter Lydia spent many hours standing on a stool at my kitchen counter, back when she needed one to reach.

We don’t cook together nearly as often these days. Still, she remembers many of the things we made in my kitchen, and cucumber salad is one of them.

By now, it belongs to her as much as it does to me.

Lydia especially loves the dill. She says it gives the salad that fresh, summery kick, and she’s right. She has loved pickles all her life and still reminds me that a pickle is really just a baby cucumber.
