Unusual Places and Music
The unexpected Germany.
When I was a kid, my favorite sandwich was mustard, ketchup, and relish.
Not with something.
That was the sandwich.
At the time, though, it was peak cuisine. I ate it proudly and repeatedly. With confidence that, in hindsight, was wildly undeserved.
I wouldn’t touch it now, but let's not dwell on the past. The point is that taste changes (thankfully). What once felt perfectly normal can later feel… questionable at best.
And what once seemed unnecessary can quietly become the thing you remember most fondly. Or at least talk about it at dinner parties, and reassure guests that you've improved somewhat over the years.
Travel works the same way.
Guidebooks are remarkably consistent creatures. Famous castle. Famous church. A square with nice buildings and an entry fee that implies cultural significance, whether you feel it or not. And to be clear: go see them. I do. They’re famous for a reason, and I enjoy a good castle like everyone else with a heartbeat.
But the things I actually remember?
They’re the odd museums. The places that make you stop and think, Who woke up one day and decided this needed to exist? The experiences that don’t feel polished, optimized, or designed to funnel you toward the gift shop exit.
That’s why I wrote a list of the best mustard, ketchup, and relish experiences in Germany.

Not replacements for the classics, but excellent side quests. The travel equivalent of that questionable sandwich: strange on paper, oddly memorable.
So yes, see the castles. Walk the old towns. Take the photos you’re socially obligated to take.
But leave room for the unusual.
Thankfully, mustard makes everything better.
P.S. I'm of the mind that music makes everything even better, but it depends on the mood. So I curated two playlists. One is Schlager Klassiker, and the other, Moderner Schlager. Pick an era, and let your ears bring you one step closer to Germany while you make a sandwich. No judgment from me on the filling…
