Spring Road Trips and Easter Lamb Cake

Brushed by consequence. If spring has you missing the parts of Germany that bring countryside drives and seasonal charm, you’re not alone. Meanwhile, here in my own very refined domestic life, I recently had to choose between reflecting on my daughter’s first birthday and scrubbing my stovetop within an inch of its life. Emotionally, the birthday won. But spiritually, I have to give it to the stovetop. To be fair, the birthday was lovely. But the stovetop had been waiting about 21 months for my attention, if we’re counting the nearly nine months before she arrived and the year since. It’s stainless steel, which I had been warned to clean carefully by everyone and their aunt-thrice-removed. So naturally, I responded with avoidance. But this week, I did it. The scratches come what may. It now looks less like “shiny stainless” and a little more “brushed by consequence.” But I regret nothing. Well, apart from buying stainless steel in the first place. My wife did warn me. And maybe that’s what spring is for. A cleansing of the soul. Sometimes that means deep-cleaning the appliance you’ve ignored for nearly two years. And other times it means mentally escaping into a spring drive through Germany and stopping by a few Easter markets along the way. Then there’s Easter itself, quietly approaching with just enough time left to be reasonable, and not quite enough time left to be relaxed. Which brings me to the lamb cake. A proper Osterlamm is one of those small German traditions that can make the season feel worth making an effort for, even from across the Atlantic. The only catch, of course, is that the lamb mold is not the sort of thing you want to remember three days before Easter and blindly assume Amazon will definitely not deliver it three towns away, again (fool me once…) So whether your spring reset involves cleaning the thing you’ve been avoiding, daydreaming about a road trip through the German countryside, or ordering a lamb cake tin before the kids start asking questions, I support all of it. Some people do a full spring refresh.The rest of us clean one appliance and call it personal growth.
