Castles with film credits. As a first-generation Canadian, my exposure to castles was almost entirely cinematic. Specifically, Indiana Jones. My childhood was formed by dramatic stone walls, ominous silhouettes, and an alarming number of people falling into pits. Canada, to be fair, does forts very well. Historic and sensible, yet not so defensible against a catapult. But castles? Not really our thing. And once you’ve seen the real deal, there’s just no comparison. Fast forward a couple of decades, and I found myself living in Wales. A country that has the highest number of castles per square mile in the world, and they don't even brag about it. I have annual passes for our two local castles that aren't even 10 miles away. We go there just for the coffee. And 10% off cakes. I’m fairly sure I moved here for love. But with a German background and a lifelong weakness for old stone fortifications, I’m willing to admit there may have been… secondary motivations. (If my wife is reading this, it was absolutely love.) It also felt oddly appropriate that we ended up getting married in a partially restored, slightly ruined castle in South Wales. Nothing says romance like drafty stone walls and centuries of unresolved history. So yes, castles stuck. For me, that means that any trip to Germany is inevitably going to involve castles. Germany has one of the highest concentrations of them anywhere, and while the history alone is reason enough to visit, there’s something extra when you realise you’ve seen this place before. On a screen. Usually with dramatic lighting and highly questionable accents. Walking through a castle you recognise from a movie just feels different. It’s no longer just dates and dynasties but a place your brain already filed under uselessly important. Even if that importance originally came from a Hollywood script. That’s what led me to put together a list of eight notable German castles that have appeared in films, plus a couple of extra cinematic landmarks you’ll almost certainly recognise. Not because you need another checklist, but because sometimes it’s fun to stand somewhere and think, oh… this is where that scene happened. But if you’re already wandering through centuries-old halls, you might as well enjoy the small thrill of recognition when fiction and reality overlap. Some people travel to the beaches.Some travel for food. I travel for castles. Preferably ones that look good in both real life and on the silver screen.
