Before It's Gone: Heritage Guide

Shorter than you think. The replies to last week's letter have been particularly touching, and I'm slowly working my way through them. Some are the kind of message you have to read twice and sit with before you start typing back, which is a polite way of saying my inbox now functions more like a small unattended garden. But part of the reason was Saturday, which I spent at a birthday party for one of my son's friends, where it turned out none of the other parents knew each other, and we didn't really know the host family beyond polite hellos at school pickup. There was a bouncy castle, which carried the afternoon for a while, because castles plus bouncy will always carry an afternoon. Past that, the inclusiveness was lacking. But at least the cake was decent. The other part of the reason was a recurring theme in many of the replies to last week's letter… a desire to form a connection between German heritage and the next generation. Ever one for a challenge, I've been a bit rabbit-holed since then. And that's when I came up with, Before It's Gone. It's a heritage guide for people with German parents or grandparents who want to capture the stories, the recipes, and the regional details before the only person who actually knows them is no longer in a position to be asked. It covers what to ask older relatives while you still can, how to find your family's actual village rather than just "somewhere in Bavaria," and what's worth labelling on the back of a photograph before two generations pass and nobody knows who anyone is. The original plan was to send it only to new subscribers. Then I realised that handing a German heritage guide exclusively to people who hadn't been here long enough to read a single letter was a strange way to thank everyone who has.
