After all this time

A name, and a reason. Something has changed, and you should probably know about it. If you've been getting emails from me for a while, you may have noticed I like to change things up occasionally. Usually, it's surface-level. This time it's more deliberate. This newsletter has been growing into something I didn't quite have the words for when I started it. I do now. Growing up in Canada with German parents, I had a version of Germany that existed entirely at home. The food, the Christmas traditions, and the particular way certain things were done. There wasn't much explanation beyond "that's how we do it." Which, as explanations go, is both completely reasonable and utterly useless to a child. You don't question it much at the time. It's only years later, when you're watching your own children approach something German-inspired on their plate with the enthusiasm usually reserved for a dental appointment. Then you start to wonder what you're actually passing down. And whether you're doing it justice (if at all). I didn't have a resource for that. No guide to being raised German-adjacent in a country that has no idea what Pfeffernüsse are, and frankly, no real desire to find out. So I started building one. It began with Tour My Germany and was eventually followed by German at Heart. It's been a ride, but one that I couldn't really define. And then it hit me… Heimweh is a German word that roughly translates as homesickness. What it actually means is closer to a longing for somewhere, or something, that may not exist in quite the way you remember it. That's the feeling I keep coming back to. Not just in myself, but in the people who write to me. German expats. Children of German immigrants. People who grew up with one foot in a culture they were never fully given the keys to. That's who this newsletter is for. And it finally has a name: Heimweh Letters. It'll still be what it's been… my take on German heritage, food, culture, and the ongoing project of keeping it alive in a household that considers Oma's potato salad an exotic delicacy. But now it has more intention, and a clearer thread running through everything I write. For today, I just wanted to reintroduce myself properly. You signed up somewhere along the way.
