Schützenfest (SHUET-tsen-fest) Literally “marksmen’s festival” From schützen (marksmen) + fest (festival). Schützenfeste grew from the shooting guilds that helped protect German towns during the Middle Ages. They remain especially important in northern and western Germany, with parades, music, competitions, and the crowning of a Schützenkönig.
