Mumpitz (MOOM-pits) literally “nonsense” or “silly rubbish” From older mummelputz, likely linked to mummel (masked figure) + butz/putz (goblin or frightening figure). By the mid-1800s, mumpitz was used in Berlin stock-exchange slang for alarming rumors or foolish talk. Today, it just means nonsense you don’t need to take seriously. Very useful, especially before coffee.
