Martinsumzug (mar-TEENS-oom-tsook) Literally “Martin’s procession” From Martin (St. Martin) + umzug (procession or parade), itself from um (around) + ziehen (to move or pull). Around November 11, children carry handmade lanterns and sing while remembering St. Martin’s kindness. The custom is especially familiar in the Rhineland and southern Germany.
