Kirmes (KEER-mess) Literally “church mass” From kirche (church) + messe (mass), forming the older word kirchmesse. A kirmes began as a celebration of a church’s consecration and later grew into a community fair with food, music, and rides. Regional names include kirchweih, kerwa, and kirta.
