Heimweh (HYM-vay) Literally “home ache” From heim (home) + weh (ache or pain). The word was recorded by the late 1500s, and in 1688 a Swiss physician described severe homesickness among Swiss soldiers serving far from home. Heimweh is the deep longing for home, family, and familiar surroundings.
