Fernweh (FAIRN-vay) literally “faraway ache” From fern (far away) + weh (ache or pain). Recorded from the 1830s, fernweh was formed as the opposite of heimweh and became closely associated with 19th-century German travel writing. It means a deep longing to leave home and explore distant places.
