Affenhitze (AH-fen-HIT-suh) Literally “monkey heat” From affe (monkey) + hitze (heat). The expression probably arose in Berlin in the late 1800s and is often linked to the intense heat in the monkey house at the Berlin Zoo. It later spread throughout Germany. Affenhitze is simply unbearably hot weather.
