Ach du meine Güte (AHKH doo MY-nuh GUE-tuh) Literally “Oh, you my goodness!” Used for surprise, delight, or disbelief, much like “Oh my goodness!” in English. My Mutti would say "Ach du meine güte!" whenever something unexpected happened … like when the cake rose higher than she planned or company showed up early. The phrase dates back at least to the 18th century and has always carried a gentle, humorous tone Omas everywhere seem to master so well.
