Inside Dresden’s Frauenkirche: Beauty and Rebirth

The first few steps inside the Frauenkirche do the same thing to almost everyone. You look up. The painted dome and the gold altar are working hard overhead, and the room is built to make you crane your neck whether you planned to or not. This is one of the most faithful Baroque reconstructions in the world, and that is not a tourist-board line. I have stood in plenty of grand German churches by now. This one is still among my favorites. The Short Version The Frauenkirche was built in the 18th century and flattened in the 1945 raids on Dresden. It was then left as a heap of stone for half a century, a deliberate ruin that stood as a memorial against war. Rebuilding ran from 1994 to 2005 and was paid for by donations from around the world. The part worth remembering is how they did it. The original stones were numbered and set back roughly where they came from, like a sandstone jigsaw the size of a building. If the façade looks patched together, it's because it is. Historical Significance The facts, if you like them to the point: Designed by George Bähr and completed in 1743. Destroyed in the Allied bombing of Dresden in February 1945. Left as a ruin for nearly 50 years, kept as a memorial of the war. Reconstructed between 1994 and 2005, funded by donations from around the world. Some of the original blackened stones went back into the new walls. You can pick them out as dark flecks across the façade like a building intentionally wearing its scars. Inside The interior feels rather intimate until you look up. The vertically gifted dome is nicknamed the Stone Bell, and it reads as far higher and lighter than its real weight, which is an illusion doing its job. Below it sits the gold altar and organ, about as lavish as a European church gets. Most of the crowd photographs the façade from the Neumarkt and moves on. Guided tours and evening concerts are priced separately. One tip worth the ink. For the dome shot, go early and look straight up. The school groups and tourist crowds arrive later, and they arrive in numbers.
