Schützenfest is the biggest weekend of the year in hundreds of German towns, and almost nobody outside the country has heard of it. I hadn't, for most of my life. Nobody in my family mentioned it. I found it sideways, the way diaspora kids find most things, reading a small town's website too late at night and working out that the men in green in the photo had been crowning a king every July for longer than adopted country has been around.
