Growing up in northern Ontario, we lived on soup through those long cold winters. Mutti's Linsensuppe and Kartoffelsuppe are still my favorites, and both are in this book.

When we came to Canada in the 1950s, Mutti had to find that German flavor with whatever the local store sold. I've written these 58 soups and stews down the same way, so they work with the ingredients you can buy where you live.
